The Justgiving Charities blog is moving home

It's been well over two years since we first posted to the charities blog on June 29th 2006 and it's time for a change. We've now combined our two blogs into one and they now live at www.justgiving.com/blog or http://justgiving.wordpress.com

New_blog_header_2

This blog's focus has been solely on charities who use Justgiving, whereas our other blog (http://justgiving.typepad.com) included news about fundraisers, tips for fundraisers, as well as the occasional story about our office.

Some of that may be of interest to you, some may not. But you can still focus on the charity specific stories by going to the Justgiving for charities category, and subscribe to the *charities only* feed (using RSS).

And, of course, all our archive posts have been moved over, so you can still read about Facebook, widgets and the like, only in much shinier and easier to read surroundings :-)

We hope you like the new look blog, and continue to keep up to date with all the latest Justgiving developments, news, research and advice...

The old charity account is being turned off

***Update 23rd October

The charity support area is now live at www.justgiving.com/charitysupport and you can find all the information on how to use the charity account here, including a video to show you how it all works.

***

Olr1 The time has finally come for us to turn off the old charity account area that currently resides here.

As of Friday 31st October, you will no longer be able to access the old area.

The old area has been there since 2001, so it's showing its age and it's been well over two years since we released the *new* and improved Charity Account (which you can access with the same log-in details) at www.justgiving.com/charityaccount.

The decision to turn off the old area finally came because the new processes we've put in place to pay Transitional Relief on Gift Aid won't be shown in the old area.

So, from November, all payment information (and more data than you can shake a stick at about everything else) will only reside at www.justgiving.com/charityaccount

Charity_account_image

We are making this announcement now to give you plenty of time to get familiar with the not-so-new Charity Account if you are still using the old area.

Is there any help available on using the Charity Account?

If you are worried about learning about the *new* Account, the best start for you would be to take one of our weekly online training sessions. As well as introducing you to the main features and areas of the Charity Account, you'll learn (for free!) how the site as a whole works and how best to start using it.

We're also planning to release a new charity support area in the next couple of months that we hope will answer all your questions about reporting, as well as all sorts of great resources you can use to help raise money on Justgiving.

For the moment, though, you can find out how to run donation payment reports and manage the data and learn about how we are paying Transitional Relief on Gift Aid in the Charity Account.

You can also find some guides on how to run different reports in our JG:Insider category. Here, you can learn how to add an event to the site, find out how much you've raised on Justgiving and also report on fundraising pages based on the page creation, expiry or event date.

But if you need more help, or have some processes that heavily rely on the old account, please get in touch with our charities helpdesk on charities@justgiving.com or 0845 021 2133 (local rate). We would love to help in any way possible.

Justgiving's *new* processing partner is… the *old* one

You may remember our recent announcement about a change in Justgiving’s payment processor.

You may or may not also recall the line in Joni Mitchell’s Big Yellow Taxi where she sings, “you don’t know what you’ve got till it’s gone”.

That refrain would be an appropriate sentiment in this instance, because it turns out that the service provided by the new payment processor (RBS Lynk Inc - RBS) did not meet the bespoke requirements we agreed, nor did it match our high expectations or the promised levels of support.

Our technical team worked extremely hard to make the change happen, but it just wasn’t the better service that we believed it was going to be.

We’ve discussed our concerns at length with the senior management team at RBS and they’re looking at how they could offer us a better support structure in future.

What does this mean for Justgiving?

We’re switching back to our previous payment processing partner (Barclaycard Merchant Services - BMS) for the majority of donations made on Justgiving, with only a small percentage of donations being processed through RBS.

This is so we can compare the two services for the foreseeable future and ensure that we make the right decision on which one to partner with in the long term. It also means that, if one of the services is experiencing downtime, we can switch to the other and make sure all donations made on the site are processed successfully.

At the same time, BMS is investing heavily in its platform and aiming to launch a much improved offering in the coming months.

What does this mean for your charity?

Another change in the card fees. Some not so good, some *very* good. But again, we’ve negotiated hard to get the best possible fees for you.

All fees exclude the need to have Verified by VISA (VBV) or MasterCard SecureCode (MCSC) on our website (except for Maestro where it is mandatory). They are the fees that BMS charge us and that we pass on to charities at cost:

•    Credit cards (Visa/Mastercard) = 1.45% (previously 1.34% with RBS)
•    Business credit cards (new card rate) = 1.85%
•    Debit cards (Switch/Maestro/Solo) = 16.25p per donation (was 22p)
•    Visa Delta/Visa Electron = 23p per donation (was 22p)
•    Business debit cards (new card rate) = 30p

The credit card fee has gone up ever so slightly, but the Maestro rate is considerably less than it used to be.

We’ve analysed the last 3 months’ donations on the site and Maestro cards accounted for around a quarter of all donations - so the card fees charged to charities will, on the whole, be about the same.

What happens next?

We've only this week decided to switch back and confirmed it with the two services. The new card fees will take effect from today, Friday 5th September.

We’ll be monitoring the performance of both BMS and RBS to make sure we choose the one that will allow us to offer the best possible service to charities.

Mercy Mankind International - how to start well on Justgiving

One of the many charities to join Justgiving in the last couple of months has been Mercy Mankind International. We think they've made a great start to using the site, so I caught up with their Chairman, Sahar, to ask them if they could explain why they decided to join and share their secrets on how to kick-start fundraising on Justgiving...

Why did you decide to join Justgiving?

We were on the lookout for a reliable, secure method of collecting donations that also displayed an online fund meter which updated itself whenever a donation was made. As we only have one person dealing with administration for our organisation, it meant that we didn't have time to deal with Gift Aid paperwork.

Justgiving helps us by doing all the Gift Aid paperwork on our behalf. Since we joined, we have received our money straight into our bank account without ever having to lift a finger, or even a pen for that matter.

How easy was it to join?

It was extremely easy to join. We had a few questions and the team at Justgiving were extremely approachable and helpful both over the phone and by email. So friendly in fact that we went and handed in our application in person at their offices. [and it was very nice to meet you]

What was the first thing you did once you joined?

Chill out - relieved that the Gift Aid hassles were now a thing of the past. The next step was to advertise the Justgiving donation link on our website as a new donation method, and to set up some target based appeals.

Justgiving has a great widget which we use on our website for highlighting our appeals. It displays the target amount, amount raised, and is very eye-catching. [you can see their great appeal page here or below]

Mercymankind2

How are you promoting online fundraising? What tools and mediums are you using?

We send a monthly newsletter to our mailing list highlighting our work and encouraging them to visit our donation page. We have a few links pointing to our website from sympathetic people. And the rest is by word of mouth. It is a slow process and you need a lot of patience, but it is worth it.

How has the response been from your supporters?

Joining Justgiving has been good for us because we feel it lends credibility to our work. We now have more regular donors.

What's been good about Justgiving?

It's a painless way to raise money online, great tools, and no paperwork.

What's been less good about Justgiving?

Our experience so far has been very positive. Adding a foreign currency feature to the donations page would be a bonus, so our many American supporters feel comfortable using Justgiving (we want their dollars!). [it's something we are looking at, but are unable to do at the moment :-(]

Do you have anything else to add?

If you are a charity, we would recommend you try Justgiving. We haven't been paid to say this by the way, honest! [I can confirm that no money has changed hands...]

****

So, many thanks go to Sahar for taking the time to answer our questions and share his charity's experiences with the blog readers. Thanks also for being nice about us too - we hope that your great start on the site continues and you carry on raising lots of money!

And just so you know, we're currently hard at work on a new charity support area that will give you all the pointers you need to get started on Justgiving if you're new to the site, and get the most of the site if you're not-so-new too. Watch this space...

More improvements to Justgiving's infrastructure

**Update 1st September**

Due to a technical delay, the planned update to servers did not go ahead last Friday and will instead take place between the hours of midnight Friday 5th September and 8.00 am on Saturday 6th September.

**Update 1st September**

Over the weekend of the 30th August, we'll be making the latest in a long line of improvements to the multi-million pound infrastructure and systems that serve the Justgiving website. We're upgrading to brand new, state-of-the-art servers (the seriously powerful computers that run the website) and moving to a new hosting environment, Qube (the people who host and services those computers).

When is it taking place?

In order to make the move, the Justgiving site will be unavailable between the hours of midnight Friday 29th August, and 8.00 am on Saturday 30th August.

This is just like our normal scheduled maintenance periods where anyone visiting the site will be shown a holding page and will be unable to create a fundraising page or make a donation.

What does this mean?

It should make the site much faster than it is now, with fundraising pages downloading much more quickly, searches taking less time and a better overall performance.

This also paves the way for us to have a dedicated server that's only used to power charity reporting (to go with the recent changes that made reporting faster and minimised its effect on the rest of the website). So when you create and download a huge report in the future, it won't affect the site.

Think of it in terms of the website being like the old DeLorean (of Back to the future fame) at the moment, and the improvements making it like the rumoured new DeLorean, complete with a spare 'flux capacitor' that will kick in seamlessly if the first breaks:

Old_server_vs_new_server_3

You see, not only is the 'engine' that powers the site going to be a lot better, we'll also have a spare 'engine' that will start up in the unlikely event of the first one not working - meaning the site will be much more robust and reliable, as well as speedier.

We moved our sister site, firstgiving.com, to this new provider over a month ago, and they have experienced a great improvement in the site. We're hoping for much of the same.

The *techy* details...

Just in case any web systems or operations people are reading this, here's what our new hardware includes:

  • Two new database clusters – each consisting of two Quad Core Xeon machines with 8GB apiece, full network and power redundancy and 64-bit throughout

All impressive sounding stuff, even if I don't have a clue what most of them are. Suffice to say, running a website like ours and making it look simple on the front end is a *lot* more complicated than you might think...

So, thanks to our Operations Manager Charlie for providing the details and managing the project - see him below receiving a well deserved cake for last month's 'Annual System Administrator Appreciation Day'...

The Wish List - a new ITV program

We were recently called by a lovely chap from ITV who wanted help in recruiting a prolific charity fundraiser to make their "dreams come true" on national telly. Well, who are we to stand in the way of such a noble aim - we see thousands of truly amazing fundraisers use our site every day and these are the people who inspire us to do what we do.

At this stage, I should add that we don't normally plug the masses of requests we get to promote events, TV shows etc. to charities who use Justgiving. But it's August, and the show will be hosted by Amanda Holden (who raised over £7,000 by doing the London Marathon this year ) so we'll make an exception...

Here's the blurb!

The team behind ANT & DEC’s SATURDAY NIGHT TAKEAWAY bring you a brand new show that turns people’s lifelong dreams into reality.

We are looking for incredible stories of dedicated fundraisers who have literally given their lives to the cause. Our show aims to grant people their ultimate wish – from an adventure experience of a lifetime to a chance meeting with their idol to build a new community centre which has been destroyed by flooding – and we are specifically looking to grant these wishes for people who are ultimately deserving.

If your charity has been helped by someone in particular that you feel has been a selfless donor and fundraiser, who have gotten their hands dirty and done some incredible things to help organise, undertake and manage fundraising events, or has even participated in fundraisers against the odds, then we would love to hear about them.

Please nominate someone today and we could be giving something back to those who are forever giving themselves to help others.

If you would like to nominate someone who has helped your charity please download and complete the application form below and email it to us at wishlist@gallowgatetv.com with ‘Charity Nominee’ in the subject field.

Alternatively you can print it out and post it to...

Payments of Gift Aid and transitional relief on Justgiving

**Update 4th September**

Due to our infrastructure move being delayed a week, we will now start paying Transitional Relief from Friday 12th September, not on the 5th as previously communicated.

**Update 4th September**

Back in March, we announced how changes to Gift Aid in this year's budget would affect donations made on Justgiving.

You'll of course remember (who could forget!) that the change in income tax from 22% to 20% meant that Gift Aid was due to go down to 25% per donation, but the Treasury added 'transitional relief' of 3.2% to ensure that Gift Aid stayed at the same level of 28.2% for the next three years - read the original post for the super-complicated ins and outs.

As you may have read this week, HMRC are now starting to make payments of Gift Aid including this transitional relief. This means we'll be paying Gift Aid and transitional relief to charities very soon in our position as Gift Aid agents for the 4,000+ charities who collect donations on Justgiving (we're classed as *agents*, but our finance guru Ryan doesn't, alas, get a special codename to show for it).

There will also be payments of transitional relief only (that lovely 3.2% bonus) for the period from the 6th April to the end of August where we reclaimed Gift Aid at the rate of 25%.

When are Justgiving making the first Gift Aid and transitional relief payments?

We have set a date for Friday 5th September to make the first of these payments.

Why then? Well, our systems team are in the middle of another project to improve the nuts and bolts of the site (it's quite exciting and you'll be able to read more on that here later this month) so that's the earliest we can make the required changes to reporting.

We'll still be making Gift Aid payments at the 25% rate up to then, but that is the first time we'll be making payments of Gift Aid and/or transitional relief.

You could call it *transitional relief Friday*. But that's not very catchy.

Will Gift Aid payment reports change?

Yes, to accommodate transitional relief we do have to change Gift Aid payment reports ever so slightly (don't worry, this does not affect normal donation payment reports). We're renaming one column and adding two new columns:

The previous 'Gross Gift Aid payable' column now becomes 'Gross Gift Aid and Transitional Relief payable' and we add in new 'Gross Gift Aid Payable' and 'Gross Transitional Relief Payable' columns.

New_gift_aid_columns

See how this compares with the old report in the file below:

Download new_gift_aid_payment_report_example.xls

Of course, you'll also need to download a new version of our Gift Aid payment report manager because of the new columns and column name:

Download justgiving_gift_aid_payment_report_manager_august_2008.xls

Over 500 people have downloaded our report managers in just over 2 months, and they've said it's been really helpful - instructions on how to use it can be viewed online or you can download the original PowerPoint below:

Quit smoking, raise money: a short (online fundraising) story. Chapter 2

Elie_3 Yesterday I wrote about my experience of donating to our web developer Elie’s fundraising page.

Since he only sits at the other end of the office, I thought I'd ask some questions about his motivations for raising money and his feelings about it...

Why did you decide to raise money whilst quitting smoking?

Rasha, another developer, gave me the idea as she recalled Ben doing the same thing a while back (www.justgiving.com/healthybenny). Quitting smoking is hard, I’ll have to admit, but not starting again is even harder. Most smokers tend to relapse. The key here is to ensure that if I quit, I don’t start again.

From reading your personal message, the charity choice is obviously quite personal. Do you have anything to add?

I’ve meant to start raising funds for charities supporting the MND / ALS cause for a while now. I thought this would be a great way to start and at the same time try living a healthier lifestyle.

My late mother found out about her disease 6 months prior to her passing away. MND is a condition that does not forgive. On average, those affected can expect a 3 to 5 year run before it kills them. Unfortunately, my late mother’s condition was much more rapid.

Well what you’re doing is a great way to honour her memory. We’re rooting for you.

I’m interested to know – would you have done this if you didn’t work at Justgiving?

Hmm... that’s a good question. I’m not entirely sure, but I’d say yes. Since working at Justgiving I’ve been able to see how easy it is to fundraise and the impact it has.

Raising funds is generally not easy and certainly expensive for charities out there. Yes, it’s for a good cause but it’s very hard to be heard and reach the ones who are willing to help the ones in need out there in this world.

Personally, I feel my job as a fundraiser is sooo much easier. It’s not much effort I’ll have to admit. All I have to do is quit smoking and get others to support my cause. But it works, and that’s what matters.

Most people who do use the site don’t work here – any advice for them?

Hmm… First and foremost, any reason to fundraise is a good reason, however silly it might be. Fundraising doesn’t mean you have to run around the world or go to the peak of Mount Everest and back safely.

It could be as easy as setting up a Sunday lunch barbecue or a Tuesday night cooking and drinks with friends (and to attend you need to donate a minimum amount to a fundraising page).

Fundraising is a social thing and Justgiving helps that, so anyone should be able to simply pass on their fundraising page url (web address) to their friends and family, work colleagues and business partners.

I’m currently working on the new version of the site and we’re trying really hard to make that process as fun and as simple and easy as possible. It’s an exciting time for all of us here at Justgiving.

Anything else you’d like to add?

Giving is part of our genetic. As human beings, we feel the need to pass on to the next generation. And by fundraising and donating this is exactly what you’re doing, ensuring your children live a long life and a better quality one.

So you should do two things today:

1) donate to my fundraising page
2) go create a fundraising page and get others to donate to a good cause

Thanks for sharing all of that with us Elie - good luck with your fundraising!

I reckon there's a future in marketing for you ever get bored of web developing (*as if*)… Now get back to working on the next version of the site! ;-)

Quit smoking, raise money: a short (online fundraising) story. Chapter 1

Last week I got this email from Elie, one of our web developers here at Justgiving:

After Rasha suggested I do the same as Ben did a while back, I've set up a fundraising page about me quitting smoking… and if I fail to do so in my lifetime, I shall double the amount made in donations through that page.

So here it is:

www.justgiving.com/eliegrumpyquitsmoking

Many thanks for your donations.

Elie

I know that he likes a good smoke, and he didn’t have to involve any charity aspect in his decision, so I thought, yes, I’ll give you some money for that - especially after reading the personal message on his page.

So I went through the usual Justgiving donation process that I’ve been through many times before. I got a thank-you from Elie and a receipt email including a thank-you from the charity.

And I’m happy to admit that I felt pretty good with myself for supporting him and the charity – well, you do, don’t you?

That’s the whole point.

A bit later that day, I had a quick look at the page to see the progress, and already £100 had been donated. This was on a Monday, so I knew that the whole £100 would be paid to the charity on the Friday.

That made me think - ten people probably spending around 3 minutes of their time had meant a charity would have £100 in their bank account, within a week, to spend on their cause.

Amazing, isn’t it?

****

2738692892_b2c0997514_4 At the time of writing, Elie (left) had raised £232 (plus Gift Aid of nearly £60) on his fundraising page.

You can see the latest figure on the widget below:

Plus, look out for an interview with Elie on the blog tomorrow, when he'll explain a bit more about why he's fundraising and what he's learnt.

**Update - here's the interview**

Reminder - payment reports change on 8th August

As we announced in June, payment reports will be scheduled from Friday 8th August. We will be making payments as normal on Fridays, and the summary of how much has been paid will be available in the Charity Account too.

The detailed reports will then be generated by our systems over the weekend and you'll be able to download them from Wednesday 13th August.

This will then be the case for all subsequent reports - payments as normal on a Fridays (as long as £100 has been donated that week, else we pay monthly) with a summary of how much has been paid, followed by the detailed information the following Wednesday.

You'll then be able to use our payment report reformatter to help manage the data.

Things to note

  • Initially, this will only be the case for donation payment reports, not Gift Aid payments
  • Old reports will still be generated "on the fly" (processed by our servers in real time)

Thanks to the transition to a new payment processing partner this week, the card fees charged will be lower for donations made from last Thursday (the time we actually moved to our processing partner).

Also, because the reports will be pre-generated and you only need to download them, you won't be seeing much of the Justgiving dog (or the data retriever) and the "dove of data"...

Doganddove
