Tagging goes live!

We are really pleased to introduce the ability to “tag” fundraising pages. Tagging is a function used on many websites to organise content. The idea being that users highlight content so that it can be highly visible to others.

What is it?

If you are doing a marathon in Bedfordshire, you could tag your page with “Bedfordshire” and “Marathon” and see all other pages with the same tags, thus connecting the thousands of fundraising pages on the Justgiving site through words fundraisers have used to describe their activities.

The screenshot below shows what it looks like on a page (click on it to enlarge):

We only released this new feature last Thursday, and it has already been taken up by lots of page owners. You can find all pages tagged with “marathon” here and “London” here.

Have a look at Dan’s page www.justgiving.com/dans-l2bskate for an example of an early adopter.

How does it work?

Tagging is perhaps most widely known as a feature of the photo sharing website www.flickr.com where users can upload their own pictures, tag them, and see all pictures listed with the same tags. See here for all photos tagged with “fundraising”.

It was first brought to a wide range of web users by the social book-marking website Del.icio.us where people bookmark interesting sites (like adding them to their favourites) and tag them for other users to see. You can find all pages tagged with “charity” at http://del.icio.us/tag/charity

You may have noticed that there is an “add to delicious” link on the above image, and a “Digg this page” link too. To find out what these mean, take a look at our user blog here

All these things help connect fundraisers on the Justgiving site so they know they are not alone, and can draw inspiration from other people’s pages. It will open up the site and show them that they are part of a bigger fundraiser community. A pretty huge one, in fact – there are currently more than 50,000 live fundraising pages on Justgiving!

All a fundraiser needs to do to add tags, is to log-in to their Justgiving Account and go to the "Your Fundraising pages" section and Manage their page.
