Shaving. Public. Ryan.

A couple of times a year, a select band of happy JGers troop off to the various conferences organised by the lovely folks at Carsonified:

Picture_2

They are pretty awesome. We've made lots of friends at each event and seen really inspiring people speak, especially the Future of Web Apps conference (or FOWA, as the kids call it). FOWA is definitely the UK tech fixture. It's introduced us to all sorts of cool things, like MOO's awesome minicards, to tracking trips on dopplr or nodding furiously in agreement with everything the founders of Get Satisfaction said about customer service in the digital age. And live diggnation is quite something.

So we were excited to see on twitter today that head Carsonite, Mr Ryan Carson himself, is shaving his head, live, this thursday at 5pm GMT, following in the footsteps of Digg's Kevin Rose and the permanently hyper Gary Vaynerchuk of Wine Library TV. It's all going down at ustream.tv and we'll have the link nearer the time.

Picture_1

We reckon his signature hat may well be seen more regularly as a consequence. Here's Kai and I as Carsonites last time we were visiting the good folks at Firstgiving in Boston:

Nick from The Apprentice!

There are some devoted Apprentice fans here at JG towers (step forward Liz Kessick), so we were pretty excited to find out that Nick Hewer from The Apprentice has made a Justgiving page.

Big_nickhewer1

He’s driving a quarter of the way round the world in an old Renault 4L to raise money for Hope and Homes for Children and he’s already gone a long way towards reaching his fundraising target.

Hewer_hortense

Sponsor Nick here and keep reading to find out what he had to say to us yesterday...

How did you get involved with Hope and Homes for Children?
Well it’s one of the authorised charities picked by the organisers and it was the one that appealed the most.

You’ve chosen a pretty exciting challenge – a trip to Mongolia – 10,000 miles in an old car…
Yes but the car’s in great shape – it’s done about 67,000 miles and I have every confidence in Renault. I’ve taken one of these cars all the way through Morocco in the past and they’re very reliable.

Is that what made you decide to do it?
Yes partly that. I like doing these drives through different landscapes and I also like mixing in different cultures. I find people are invariably very kind.

It’s a long way from the corporate London lifestyle – what are you going to miss most?
Nothing. Just family. I think it’s incumbent on us all to be uncomfortable once in a while, so we can appreciate what it’s like not to be so comfortable.

What are you looking forward to/dreading the most?
I’m sort of dreading some of the desert stuff, because it’s very demanding on the car and also on the person driving it. But I’m looking forward to having done it!

How have you found using Justgiving?
I’m delighted – it’s absolutely marvellous. I’m going to blog about the challenge and link to my page from there too.

Oh good – we’ll link to your blog as soon as it’s live! Any special message for all your Apprentice fans before you go?
We’re always looking at people undertaking difficult tasks and it’s about time we did one of our own. It’s easy to criticise, but let’s see how I get on!

Our new homepage

We're very proud to present a new Justgiving homepage, designed by our very own Will Colley (aka the designer with the brightly-coloured trainers). We hope you like it.

Justgiving_the_easiest_way_to_fundr

To mark the occasion, you can read our interview with Will. But before you do, we'd like to show you 1) a photo of Will and 2) a photo of his famous trainers:

Will_c_shoes

So Will, you’ve been with Justgiving for a few months now – how are you finding it?

Great, everyone’s been very welcoming. I think that it’s because of the business that we’re in, everyone works as a team and is really willing to help, so you don’t get the feeling that you’re working alone or that anyone is too important that you can’t approach, so yeah very happy to be part of the JG team.

Did the idea of redesigning our homepage come from you or were you given a brief?

Well, I was given a brief and a fair bit of freedom to come up with something, but really it was helped along with the user testing that Liz was doing at the time. That really helped me not to get too caught up in what ‘I’ wanted the home page to look like. This is easier said than done when you’re a designer! I do try hard not to get too focused on what I want, but to try to deliver a good clear vision of what the company needs to help users to navigate the site.

What were your aims/guiding principles in the redesign?

My aims were to create, dare I say it, a beautiful page to look at that didn’t confuse the user with too much noise on the page. Meaning that the design should let the user find the things that they need without confusing them with clutter or too much visual noise. Also, a strong composition laid out in a coherent way with as much content ‘above the fold’ as was possible.

What are you most pleased with about the page?

I think that the some of the calls to action, especially the ‘Find out more’ are the most pleasing, but also the fact that the two main searches are in prime real estate areas, and that the blog is ‘above the fold’.

What are your design inspirations? What sites/designers do you like?

I get inspired by lots of things I see every day, corny as it may sound!!! Normally when I’m cycling or doing exercise.

As for sites, the guys at cpluv do a great job at posting cool stuff. Also the guys at Positive Hype are doing some very cool stuff, and Fadi and Marco with their team at Pod1 do some really inspirational client work.

What are you working on next?

Well we are totally focused on Version 3 (aka v3) of the Justgiving site. At present, I’m researching everything from navigation to footers, layouts - you name it I’m checking it out. So I’m trying to move away from client work and stay focused on v3. Knowing that we have a really good designer called Nick joining us next week, I hope to be able to make a serious dent into the v3 beast. Mind you going to Italy next week… :-)

Our New Friends

Picture_2

I think we all blog less in January. That's my opening excuse.

Anyway, we've got some exciting news.

We've recently made friends with MOO.

MOO.com print your photos onto real life stuff - like minicards, postcards, greeting cards and stickers. Yes, even stickers. We use them as business cards and they are 150% more fun than your business cards.

Picture_3 We've been long-time MOO fanboys here at JG and it's brilliant to be proper friends.

You lot have been asking for something to print out so that you can give your Justgiving page url to people you meet out and about. Sponsorship forms still aren't very pocket-friendly.

Well here's the solution. MOO stuff is really cheap and as customisable as it gets. If none of this makes sense yet, check out what Francis has done with his minicards for the London Marathon:

Sd250108marathonmoo

You can do it too with your own photos. Got 100 different photos? You'll get 100 different cards so your friends can choose which one they want.

Nice way to ask for support isn't it?

So, check out our own special MOO site below and order your very own little boxes of printed joy today:

Resolutions

A happy 2008 to all. We hope you had a suitably groovy New Year.

The Christmas tree is gone. Much hoovering was required:

Dsc00503

We're making some changes to the site very soon, so keep your eyes peeled.

More details when it happens!

Festive Flickr & YouTube Puns

Nope. I can't think of any today.

Anyway, YouTube and Flickr integration on fundraising pages has gone live this morning. It looks a little bit like this:

If you have a fundraising page, log-in to your account to get started.

MySpace Widgets are live!

Remember our flash widget? This little guy:

Well, this morning we've rolled out a brand new version that is fully compatible with MySpace. They've been kind enough to help out getting it working. Yay MySpace.

You'll find the new version in the usual place; just click the 'promote this page' link on any fundraising page to grab the code. It's tabbed next to the original version (which works on sites like typepad, blogger, vox, xanga and wherever else the kids are hanging out these days).

Yay! MOO Discounts!

Every year, we meet hundreds of people with justgiving pages. In real life, away from the Internets. There are always a few people who have made some cards with their justgiving page address on them.

We always think what a brilliant idea that is, and how great it would be if we offered that to everyone. After all, not everyone has all the email addresses they're going to need to hand, and some justgivers have told us it's nice to have an actual thing they can give to their supporters instead of just emails. Physical stuff is good.

So, with the help of our friends at MOO, we're doing a little experiment.

MOO make little minicards, they're a bit like business cards except they're half the size and 100% less boring.

They come in packs of 100 and they're printed with your very own photos, which you can either upload yourself or pull in from the most popular photo sharing sites like Flickr and Facebook.

Here at JG we use them as business cards, but we've run into fundraisers who've used them to promote their fundraising pages. These are mine:

Moo

Here's why minicards work brilliantly alongside justgiving pages:

- they fit in your wallet, and consequently the wallets of your friends

- they're not sponsorship forms, so no hassle

- they're something memorable and special to give to people who can't sponsor you there and then, but intend to

- you can personalise them as much as you want (100 photos = 100 unique minicards)

- you can give them to people in the pub whose email addresses you don't have

So what's the deal?

You can order a set of minicards with a 10% discount by entering the promo code that you'll find in your inbox from us. If you haven't received an email, then let me know by emailing me direct with the address of your justgiving page and we'll send it over.

Don't worry if you haven't got any photos to use, there are tons of professional designs on MOO already.

So, get those cards out there. Let us know if it works. You can get started right here.
